"We went bushwalking and went looking for animals. We saw: emus, kangaroos, paddy melons, one that was the Tasmanian devil's cousin with white spots and is nocturnal and different bird species.

At the end of the day we went to a little lake area to have an activity where we measured the amount of biodiversity in the wetland! Unfortunately the lake was man made so it was a bit too salty so there weren't as many invertebrates living in the water. Overall, we had fun and really learned a lot." -Selin and Suham

"My favourite part was catching the invertebrates in the water and observing them under the microscope." -Yamin

"We did bush walking. We searched for invertebrate. We learnt about the different types of kangaroos. We saw emus and other animals." -Tasnim

"I liked when the emu crossed the road and walked towards us. And I liked stealing fish and other water bugs from other groups." -Aya

Sukran and Selvi's reflection on the excursion

Over the holidays you might want to go visit it too!

Language Learning Tips

The speed and ease of learning a new language involves many factors, some of which are going to be to your advantage, and some are going to be obstacles that could slow you down. Below you will find tips on how to learn a new language, which include steps to minimize the learning difficulties and take advantage of some methods that can speed up your learning process.

Language Learning Tips

Overview: Imagine a language as a living thing where vocabulary is the body parts, grammar is the brain, language resources are the muscles, and motivation is the energy which makes that living thing work hard or not. To be able to use a language, you need a body, a brain, some muscles, and energy.

Vocabulary is what most of the language is made of, you will need lots of that (around 3000 words is fair). To be able to use the vocabulary, you need grammar, which is the brain that allows you to use and manipulate your vocabulary. You need some muscles: language resources such as audio lessons, exercises, and practice can speed up your learning process. Finally you need motivation, without it, any language could seem difficult to learn.

Below are 4 of the most important elements in learning a language, with an explanation to why that is. If you think other factors should be included too, please comment at the bottom.

  1. Vocabulary: Did you know that a native speaker of most languages of the world only uses about 3000 to 5000 words? What's more, a native speaker uses only about 300 to 500 words on a daily basis, which are repeated over and over again. That means, if you memorize around 3000 words, you will be able to say write and understand more than 75% of the general conversations. If you memorize 33 words per day, in 3 months you would have memorized 3000 word.
  2. Grammar: This powerful tool allows you to manipulate the vocabulary you already memorized. With it, you can structure the vocabulary to make proper sentences, but it can also help you multiply the number of words you already know. With a couple hundreds of words and a dozen grammar rules you can form thousands of sentences simply by changing the order or adding prefixes and suffixes.
  3. Language resources: The more adequate tools you have available to you, the faster and better you learn. For example, if you listen to audio lessons, practice your speaking and writing by chatting with native speakers every day is better than simply learning from a book. You need to diversify your methods of learning. Reading, listening, writing, all can help you practice and remember more.
  4. Motivation: It is the energy that drives the whole process, without it, you will feel like swimming against the current, and you will give up eventually. Motivation can help you set goals and achieve them. If you say I should memorize 10 words a day for the next 3 months, then, all you need is motivation, because it's not an impossible goal, it's only a matter of passion for learning.

In short, you needs lots of vocabulary, a good number of grammar rules, adequate language resources and motivation. You can improvise with the rest depending on the language you're learning.

What is fasting?

What is the Religious Decree of Fasting?

Fasting means not eating, drinking during the time period between the time of fajr sadiq (the second/real fajr; the time of the day when there is light in the horizon before sunrise) and the sunset.

Fasting is also called imsak. Imsak means keeping the soul/self away from the things it wishes and not doing them. The antonym for imsak is iftar, which means breaking the fast.

The Religious Decree of Fasting

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. At the same time, it is one of the great signs of Islam. It was made fard (obligatory) in Madinah, one and a half year after the Hegira (Migration from Makkah to Madinah) and on the 10th day of the month of Shaban. Its obligation is established by the Book (the Qur'an), the Sunnah (the practice of the Prophet) and by Ijma' (consensus of the ummah/community or the ulama/scholars of Islam).

In the Qur'an, the following is stated:

O you who believe! Prescribed for you is the Fast, as it was prescribed for those before you...(The Qur'an, Al-Baqarah, 2:183)

Fasting is also a bodily worship like the obligatory prayer. The prominent quality of this worship is that it keeps people away from evils, and that it curbs the excessive wishes and urges of the soul. In the hadith, the following is stated:

Fasting is a shield (it protects humans from lustful desires and evils). The fasting person should not utter bad words out of ignorance. The fasting person should answer those who want to fight and struggle with him/her only by saying: 'I am fasting.'

Since fasting protects humans from evil inclinations, Allah's Messenger (PBUH) advised young, single people to fast in order to be relieved from the compression of lustful urges. It is also a scientifically accepted reality that fasting calms down lustful feelings.

When the month of fasting comes, there occurs an overall decrease in the number of crimes committed in the community. The evils are reduced to the minimum. In return, the good deeds increase. Among individuals a cordial unification and affection form. Mutual help and solidarity increase. Allah's Messenger (PBUH) explains the reason for the social effect that fasting has in the following hadith:

When Ramadan, the month of fasting, comes, the gates of Paradise are opened; the gates of Hell are shut and all devils are chained.

The great worth and value that fasting has in the sight of Allah is explained in a hadith qudsi as follows:

All the good deeds and worships that humans perform are for themselves (there is a worry of pleasure and benefit in them). However, fasting is not like that. Fasting is a worship performed only for My acceptance. And I will give its reward.

In another hadith qudsi, the following is stated:

For every good deed, there is a reward of ten to seven hundredfold. However, the reward of fasting is not given by that criterion. For it is for Me. It is only Me Who will give its reward.

As is understood from those statements, although for every good deed and worship there is a certain thawab (reward for good deeds that is tallied on qiyamah/judgment day) attached to it from 10 to 700 credits, for the fast the amount of thawab is boundless. And Allah did not leave it to His angels to reckon its reward but kept it for only Himself. For this reason, on the Day of Judgment, the believers may find great amounts of rewards for their fasting that they never expected.

Allah's Messenger (PBUH) pointed out that issue as follows:

There are two joys for the fasting person: The first one is the joy at the time of iftar (when s/he breaks the fast after sunset); the other is the joy of fasting (its reward) when s/he meets his/her Lord.

In some hadiths, the high virtue and honorable status that the fasting people attain is expressed as follows:

There is a gate in Paradise called Rayyan. On the Judgment Day, only those who fasted can enter from that gate (into Paradise). Nobody else can enter through it. (On the Judgment Day), a call is issued: Where are those who fasted? Those who fasted get up and enter. And after they enter, the gate is shut; from then on, nobody can enter from that gate.

I swear to Allah that the smell of hunger of the fasting mouth is more pleasant than the smell of musk, cleaner and more amiable in the presence of Allah.

The prayer of three people is not rejected:

That of the fasting person until s/he eats iftar (meal eaten after sunset to break one's fast)

That of the equitable/just head of the state

That of the wronged/oppressed.

PE

In Secondary PE we have been focusing on the key sports of soccer and netball in preparation for our inter school tournaments. The pupils have been working on their skill development, gameplay and their coaching techniques by leading small numbers of students in different activities.

Congratulations to our Year 9 and 10 boys and girls for fantastic performances in the inter school soccer tournaments. We faced some tough opposition even beating the eventual winners 4-1; however unfortunately this wasn't enough to secure our place in the finals.

Well done to all the students that were involved and good luck to the year 7 and 8 girls and boys that have their inter school netball and soccer tournaments in the coming weeks.

In year 9/10 VCD we have been studying commercial packaging and are now finishing beach house design for a family of four . We also attended an excursion relating to our studies.

On Wednesday 18th of May the Visual Communication and Design students attended a seminar showing them how to achieve excellence if they choose Design as a VCE subject in coming years.

They got to see how the design process works and how the assessors mark their work. The most excellent students in the state had their design folios and final presentations on display upstairs in the Melbourne Museum. Our students viewed these and commented on how much work was done as well as the professional standard of the work.

We also attended a speech from an industry graphic design artist named John Yanny of Voodoo Design co. John has done work for Hospitals' Mental Health week, Anytime Fitness, Microsoft, Australian Naval Defence, and Cha Time tea houses. He showed us the importance working consistently well with clients by keeping in contact regularly and knowing what will attract your target market into buying a product. Also it is very important to make a variety of people feel good about interacting with your designs. I hope our students remember some of his inspirational quotes applicable to all areas of life.

There has been water well campaign and the website introduction with a guest speaker from East Meadows Girls Campus. At Sirius College we are all working hard to fundraise for the building of water wells in Cambodia. Our aim is to open up one well for the school but we think we will be able to open more than that hopefully!

Pastoral care students from 10 /B came to the sleepover program. They had some quality time, and spent their time with studying for their exams. Here are some photos from the last week's sleepover program.

Fundraising

On Saturday the 28th of May together with Ms Esra and my Year 7 girls we hosted and ran a sausage sizzle at Officeworks in Caroline Springs. The event was a great success, we raised $1245. All funds raised will be going towards the Water Well Campaign in Cambodia. I would like to thank all my Year 7 girls that participated, the staff that helped out and all the families who donated and supported us. May you all be rewarded for your generosity.
